Cool in the City: Mačkozbornik
We chose cats as a special cultural and animalistic topic of our Cat Encyclopedia (Jesenski & Turk, Kulturno informativni centar, 2022), because they are close to us, because we live with them, we love them and we like to think that we know them and that they love us. Cats are our friends and attendants, they comfort us, entertain and encourage us, calm us down and put us to sleep, teach us patience and independence, elegance and refinement” – wrote Rosana Ratkovičić, art historian, art critic and curator who edited the anthology together with Suzan Marjanić, theorist of performance art and critical animal studies. It is a comprehensive collection in which 55 articles by domestic authors analyze various aspects of the existence and meaning of cats, as living beings and metaphors. The articles deal with human coexistence with cats and zooethics, literary and film cats, cats in fairy tales, in children’s literature, and in fine arts, visual culture and popular culture, they talk about cats in culture and cultural research, about feline linguistic issues, and about cats in ethnotradition.
